About I'RAISE:
I'RAISE Girls & Boys International Corporation, founded in 2012 in the heart of the North Bronx, began as a mentorship program aimed at at-risk female youth living in New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) facilities. With the visionary leadership of CEO Shanequa Moore, the organization expanded its impact, moving from a mentorship focus to addressing the critical need for mental health support for youth in public schools.
Today, I'RAISE is committed to fostering resilience, promoting well-being, and empowering youth through culturally responsive programs and advocacy for equity in mental healthcare. Through its work, I'RAISE is creating lasting social change for vulnerable children and families.
**This is an unpaid internship. The Internship qualifies for Academic or Fieldwork Credit. Please speak with your college professor or advisor.**
Position Overview: A mentor may share with a mentee information about their own career or education path, as well as provide guidance, motivation, emotional support, and role modeling. A mentor may help with exploring careers, higher educations, setting goals, developing contacts, and identifying resources. The mentor role may change as the needs of the mentee change. Some mentoring relationships are part of structured programs that have specific expectations and guidelines: others are more informal.
Location: Hybrid - Bronx, New York
Hours: 6 to 8 hours per week
Career Mentor Intern Responsibilities:
Ability to encourage and empower personal development
Identify and correct gaps in relevant skills and knowledge for success
Help others to develop and maintain their confidence
Develop and maintain a broader perspective on career options and opportunities
Help youths identify and achieve their career goals provide additional access to a senior role model prepare for meetings with the mentee and be clear on expectations
Have a clear understanding of and an agreement of the level of confidentiality required within the mentoring relationship
Adhere to the ground rules to build mutual trust and respect
Close the relationship at the right time, reflect and share feedback (Mentee - evaluate their development in line with the objectives agreed.)
Qualifications:
Candidates should be enrolled in a degree program in Psychology, Social Work, Mental Health Counseling, Social Service, Human Service, Medicine, Entrepreneurship, or related field
Strong written, verbal communication and empathetic skills are essential as Interns will often be communicating with their mentee(s) and school staff
Department of Education Fingerprint / clearance required ($135 fee). Cost is not covered by I'RAISE at this time.
Mandatory to come in-person at least 3 times per month on Wednesdays or Fridays
